“Beautiful” Bobby Blackmon has been performing the blues his whole life. We are blessed to have him share his talents with The Villages every week. He played solo at Fenney last month. The crowd started out small, but after the first hour went by, the crowd grew. In 2010 Blackmon opened for the incomparable BB King in Orlando, and like King, Blackmon interweaves stories and jokes in his performance. He began his set with original blues songs. Reminiscent of “Behind the Music”, Blackmon would introduce the songs he wrote and tell the crowd about the inspiration behind them. One of the songs was written for his now late wife. Toward the middle of the set he began playing blues covers, bending his guitar strings and lending his vocal talents as he played over the drum machine. Someone in the crowd said Blackmon occasionally plays local gigs with a backing band. When he does, the performances “are not PG at all”, but are highly recommended. Blackmon’s energy grew as his set progressed, and the crowd responded in kind. There were several couples dancing toward the end of his performance. Everyone sang along as Blackmon performed “My Girl”. Modern R&B hits rounded out the show, and the crowd wasn’t ready for him to stop. The next time the “almost famous” Bobby Blackmon plays, please go see him. But leave the folding chair at home because he will get you on your feet!
